On the free walking tour in Budapest, our guide also mentioned traditional Hungarian cuisine. One of the plates that interested me the most was the food above which is called Lángos, or, as it’s lovingly referred to by Hungarian teenagers, “Communist Pizza.”
It’s basically fried dough in the shape of a pizza pie covered in sour cream (sour cream is Hungary’s ketchup and I fully support this), shredded cheese, and drizzled in salt and garlic sauce. How good does that sound?! When it’s March in Budapest and you’ve been walking around all morning in the rain, it’s SO satisfying. It basically tastes like funnel cake minus the powdered sugar plus sour cream, salt, garlic, and cheese.
Lángos got it’s nickname because of it’s affordability and it’s sold most commonly at bus stations, fairs, and all around Eastern European countries at places like sporting events. I would eat this every day if I could (though I’d probably feel awful).
I don’t know how to deep fry anything, but I did, I’d definitely try making Lángos with this recipe and if you do know how to deep fry something, you definitely should try making this and let me know how it turns out!
